In the wake of a tragic shooting that claimed the life of a National Guard member and critically injured another, the U.S. administration has announced a significant halt to all asylum decisions. This move also includes a pause on issuing visas for individuals traveling with Afghan passports, signaling a heightened focus on immigration control.
Tragic Incident and Security Concerns
The incident involved Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national, who allegedly shot and killed 20-year-old Specialist Sarah Beckstrom and critically wounded 24-year-old Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe. Both service members were part of the West Virginia National Guard, deployed to Washington D.C. as part of a crime-fighting mission. Investigators are actively working to determine the motive behind the attack.
Halt on Asylum and Visas
Joseph Edlow, director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), stated on social media platform X that asylum decisions would be paused “until we can ensure that every alien is vetted and screened to the maximum degree possible.” Concurrently, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the State Department has halted “visa issuance for ALL individuals traveling on Afghan passports.” These measures are being framed as necessary steps to enhance national security.
Suspect’s Background and Asylum Status
Rahmanullah Lakanwal, the suspect, reportedly worked with the CIA during the Afghanistan War and had previously assisted U.S. forces. He entered the U.S. in 2021 through Operation Allies Welcome and applied for asylum under the Biden administration, with his asylum being approved this year under the Trump administration. His former landlord described him as polite and quiet, while a neighbor noted he struggled to find work and had seemingly disappeared two weeks prior to the incident.
Criticism and Increased Deployment
Critics argue that the U.S. already has rigorous vetting systems for asylum seekers and that the current slowdown has been worsened by the current administration’s policies. Shawn VanDiver of #AfghanEvac stated, “They are using a single violent individual as cover for a policy they have long planned, turning their own intelligence failures into an excuse to punish an entire community and the veterans who served alongside them.” In response to the shooting, the administration has ordered an additional 500 National Guard members to Washington D.C., bringing the total assigned to the joint task force to nearly 2,200.
Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, remembered for her leadership and dedication, had volunteered for the deployment in Washington. A moment of silence was held in her honor before a West Virginia University football game.
