Angela Bassett’s $25M Empire: Acting to Production

Angela Bassett is more than just a celebrated actress; she’s a cultural icon who has consistently used her platform to uplift Black women and pave the way for future talent. With a career spanning three decades, Bassett has portrayed some of history’s most revered Black women, earning critical acclaim and historical recognition, including being the first Marvel actor nominated for a Golden Globe and an Oscar.

From Yale to Hollywood Stardom

Born in New York City and raised in Florida, Bassett’s path to Hollywood was paved with academic excellence. She earned a BA in African-American studies and an MFA from the Yale School of Drama. Bassett’s early roles in films like ‘Boyz n the Hood’ and ‘Malcolm X’ showcased her talent, but it was her transformative portrayal of Tina Turner in the 1993 biopic ‘What’s Love Got to Do with It’ that truly launched her career, earning her a Golden Globe and an Academy Award nomination.

Following this breakthrough, Bassett took on a diverse range of roles in iconic films such as ‘Waiting to Exhale,’ ‘How Stella Got Her Groove Back,’ and ‘The Rosa Parks Story.’ Her powerful portrayals of real-life Black women resonated deeply, making her a household name and a symbol of Black excellence in cinema.

Blockbuster Success and Lucrative TV Deals

Bassett’s star power has translated into significant financial success, particularly with her roles in major blockbuster films. While her earnings for ‘What’s Love Got to Do with It’ were reported around $250,000, her role as Queen Ramonda in Marvel’s ‘Black Panther’ franchise significantly boosted her earnings. ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ alone grossed over $850 million globally, demonstrating Bassett’s immense draw at the box office. She also lent her voice to the Oscar-winning Pixar film ‘Soul.’

Her television work has also been highly lucrative. Bassett starred in ‘American Horror Story’ and has been a lead on the hit series ‘9-1-1’ since 2018. In 2021, she inked a new deal for ‘9-1-1,’ reportedly earning approximately $450,000 per episode, making her one of the highest-paid actresses of color in a drama series.

Building an Empire Through Production and Philanthropy

Beyond her acting prowess, Bassett is a formidable producer. Alongside her husband, actor Courtney B. Vance, she co-founded Bassett Vance Productions. The company signed a significant deal with 20th Television in 2024 to focus on creating content that centers Black voices. “Angela and Courtney are deeply thoughtful storytellers, with incredible intellect and insight, and true ability to unearth distinct, relevant and unique material that reflects the human experience and the world in which we live,” stated Karey Burke, president of 20th Television.

Bassett is also dedicated to philanthropy, working with organizations focused on the arts, women’s empowerment, and health. She serves as a celebrity ambassador for UNICEF and has supported initiatives like the Rape Foundation brunch for the Rape Treatment Center.

Investing in Real Estate and Fair Pay

Bassett and Vance have also made strategic investments in real estate, including a Los Angeles home they sold for $6 million and a New York City apartment purchased for $845,000. As of 2024, Bassett’s net worth is estimated at $25 million, a testament to her consistent success in film and television, lucrative TV deals, and her impactful work as a producer. She has consistently advocated for fair pay for Black women in the industry, emphasizing that while money isn’t her primary motivator, knowing her worth and being compensated fairly is crucial. “Everyone wants to keep the lights on, but I’ve never been motivated solely by money or fame,” she shared. “For me, it’s always and only been for the joy of following my dreams.”

In 2023, Bassett also partnered with Dr. Barbara Sturm to launch a skincare line tailored for women with darker skin tones, addressing concerns like hyperpigmentation and inflammation. Looking ahead, she continues to expand her creative endeavors, lending her voice to the upcoming animated film ‘Wildwood’ and starring in ongoing projects like ‘9-1-1.’
