A horrific act of violence on public transit has led to federal terrorism charges. Lawrence Reed, a 50-year-old Chicago man, is accused of dousing a 26-year-old woman with gasoline and setting her on fire aboard a CTA Blue Line train earlier this week. The victim remains in critical condition with extensive burns.
The Attack and Arrest
According to an affidavit from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Reed approached the woman from behind on the train, removed a bottle cap, and poured the suspected gasoline on her. Surveillance footage reportedly shows Reed purchasing fuel at a gas station about 30 minutes prior to the incident. When the woman attempted to move away, Reed allegedly ignited the bottle, setting her ablaze.
Witnesses described chaos erupting in the train car as passengers fled the flames. The victim managed to exit the train at a downtown station, where she collapsed on the platform and was subsequently rushed to the hospital. Reed, who fled the scene, was apprehended the following morning, reportedly wearing the same clothing seen in surveillance footage and making incriminating statements.
Court Appearance and Terrorism Charge
During his federal court hearing, Reed repeatedly interrupted proceedings, shouting “I plead guilty!” He also insisted on representing himself and, at one point, claimed to be a Chinese citizen. Prosecutors stated that Reed committed the assault “with the intent to cause death and serious bodily injury” on a public transit system, a charge that could result in a life sentence. Federal documents also indicate Reed allegedly yelled “burn alive, b****!” at the victim before igniting the flames.
Reed’s history of arrests has raised questions about how he was not in custody prior to this incident. It remains unclear if state charges will also be filed. The attack has drawn comparisons to other recent violent incidents on public transportation, prompting calls for increased safety measures.
The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) has stated its full cooperation with investigators and highlighted its security measures, including surveillance cameras throughout the system. This incident underscores the ongoing challenges of ensuring safety in public transportation networks.
