Get ready, food lovers! The prestigious Michelin Guide has officially expanded its reach, launching its very first regional guide for the Southeastern United States. This significant debut places the vibrant and diverse culinary landscape of the American South firmly on the global gastronomic map.
A Culinary Milestone for the Southeast
The guide was unveiled during a special ceremony at Michelin’s North American headquarters in Greenville, South Carolina. It shines a spotlight on exceptional restaurants across several states, including South Carolina, Louisiana, Tennessee, and North Carolina. This inaugural selection features one two-star restaurant, ten new one-star establishments, and three green-star restaurants, building upon the existing Michelin Guide for Atlanta.
Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the Michelin Guide, expressed his admiration for the region’s food scene. “The cuisine of the American South is a rich blend of cultural influences, brought to life by skilled chefs who have crafted some of the region’s most iconic dishes,” he commented. He noted that inspectors were impressed by the region’s culinary prowess, highlighting everything from Southern staples like barbecue, Creole, and seafood to diverse international flavors.
Emeril’s Leads the Pack, South Carolina Shines
Leading the accolades is Emeril’s in New Orleans, which earned an impressive two-star rating. The restaurant is helmed by E.J. Lagasse, son of celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse, making him the youngest chef to lead a two-Michelin-starred kitchen. Emeril’s celebrates contemporary Creole cuisine with standout dishes like oyster stew and smoked salmon cheesecake.
South Carolina emerged as a major highlight, securing four of the ten new one-star restaurants – three in Charleston and one in Greenville. The guide also recognized restaurants for their commitment to sustainability with its green star designation. Luminosa in Asheville, North Carolina, January at Southall Farm & Inn in Franklin, Tennessee, and Counter in Charlotte, North Carolina, were honored for their inspiring vision and sustainable dining practices.
A Boost for Regional Tourism
This recognition is a significant boost for the culinary tourism sector in the Southeast. By highlighting these acclaimed establishments, the Michelin Guide encourages both local and international travelers to explore the rich gastronomic offerings of the region. It’s a testament to the hard work and creativity of the chefs and restaurant teams who are defining the future of Southern cuisine.
