Imagine this: it’s your birthday, and instead of unwrapping presents, you’re busy making sure others have something to unwrap. That’s exactly what 8-year-old Alex Anning did on Chicago’s South Side, proving that kindness truly knows no age limit. He decided to trade birthday cake for canned goods and toys for treats, all to help families in his community.
A Spark of Compassion
Alex’s incredible journey started with a simple, yet profound, moment. He saw a person experiencing homelessness and couldn’t shake the feeling that he needed to do something. This empathy soon blossomed into a desire to help others facing hardship.
Inspired by another young changemaker, kindergartener Armani Crews who had previously used her birthday to help the homeless, Alex approached his mom, Kymbria Young. He shared his heartfelt wish: to host a food drive and make a real difference.
Turning a Wish into Action
His mom, Kymbria, couldn’t be prouder. She shared, “When Alex saw someone struggling, he wanted to help. His compassion shows that anyone can take action and make a difference at any age.” This powerful sentiment guided their efforts.
Alex teamed up with the nonprofit organization Season to Soar to bring his vision to life. The food drive was scheduled for Saturday, November 1st, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Carrie Jacobs Bond Elementary School. The goal? To provide 150 families with essential groceries.
A Birthday Gift for the Community
The families who attended the drive received more than just food; they received bags filled with meat, pasta, bread, and even a sweet dessert. It was a tangible act of love and support, demonstrating the immense impact one young person can have.
While Alex might not have received traditional birthday gifts this year, he gained something far more valuable: the satisfaction of feeding 150 families and the joy that comes from giving. His actions serve as a beautiful reminder that happiness truly multiplies when we share it.
