Dreaming of your next getaway but don’t have a passport, or is yours about to expire? Good news! The U.S. Department of State is making it easier for many to get their travel documents in order. They’re hosting a series of ‘Special Passport Acceptance Fairs’ across the country, running from mid-August through early Fall 2025.
Passport Fairs: Your Chance to Apply
From August 16th to September 30th, over 50 of these special events are scheduled. These fairs are particularly helpful for first-time applicants or those under 16 who need a passport. They’re strategically scheduled on weekends and at times that are more convenient for people who can’t make it to standard passport offices during typical business hours.
If you’re in the tri-state area (New York, New Jersey, Connecticut), you’re in luck, as over 30 of these events are happening in New Jersey alone! However, it’s super important to check the details for your specific location. Out of the 50+ fairs, only 14 will be accepting walk-ins, so most will require an appointment.
What to Bring to a Passport Fair
To make your visit as smooth as possible, you’ll need to come prepared. Make sure to fill out the DS-11 form beforehand, print it on single-sided paper, but *don’t* sign it yet! You’ll sign it on-site at the facility. You’ll also need proof of U.S. citizenship (like a birth certificate), a physical government-issued photo ID, a passport photo, and payment for the application and facility fees.
- Completed DS-11 form (unsigned)
- Proof of U.S. Citizenship
- Valid Government-Issued Photo ID
- Passport Photo
- Payment for Fees
If you’re applying for a passport for someone under 18, their guardian will need to present their own government-issued photo ID. You can apply for a passport book, a passport card, or both, with costs varying based on your choice and age. Remember, expedited service will incur an additional fee if you need your passport quickly.
Who Can Use These Fairs?
It’s important to note that these special passport fairs are primarily for first-time applicants and children aged 16 and under. If you’re eligible to renew your passport using Form DS-82, the State Department advises that you can submit your application online or by mail at any time. These fairs are a fantastic opportunity for those new to the passport process!
