Florida’s Cannabis Boom: Jasmine Johnson Champions Equity

Florida’s cannabis industry is experiencing a massive boom, often described as a ‘green rush.’ While many dispensaries are focused solely on rapid expansion and profit, Jasmine Johnson is charting a different course. Through her brand, GŪD Essence, she’s not just aiming for success but is deeply committed to ensuring this burgeoning industry benefits the communities most affected by past cannabis prohibition.

Building More Than Just a Dispensary

Johnson, one of the few Black women leading a cannabis operation at this scale in Florida, envisions GŪD Essence as more than just a place to purchase cannabis. She positions it as a cultural hub that prioritizes education, trust, and community care. “When people walk into our space, they should feel like they’re stepping into a place that values quality, transparency, and connection,” she explains.

A Diverse Background Fuels a Unique Vision

Johnson’s journey into the cannabis world is as unique as her approach. Her background spans agriculture, hospitality, and real estate, providing her with a rich foundation. Her family’s agricultural roots instilled a respect for cultivation, while her degree in Tourism & Hospitality Management honed her skills in creating exceptional customer experiences. Even her early entrepreneurial venture, opening a jazz and blues lounge in college, demonstrates her drive to bring visions to life.

Her education also played a crucial role. Exposure to science and medicine in high school, coupled with internships in pathology research and work in a pharmacy, allowed her to see cannabis through both a wellness and a business lens. Furthermore, her family’s extensive real estate holdings, which she helped grow into a multi-million dollar portfolio, instilled the ownership mindset critical in an industry where equity is often at risk.

Restoration and Reclaiming Traditions

For Johnson, all these experiences converge on the theme of restoration. She sees cannabis as deeply intertwined with cultural history, referencing the traditional herbal remedies used by grandmothers. “Today, it’s about reclaiming those traditions openly and with dignity,” she states, aiming to build a seed-to-sale research facility in Overtown, a neighborhood historically impacted by prohibition.

This facility is envisioned as a place to create jobs, provide community training, and demonstrate how cannabis can be a powerful tool for healing, learning, and economic opportunity. Johnson is particularly keen on shifting the narrative around cannabis, moving beyond the simplistic idea that people just want to get high. She emphasizes its potential to address stress, trauma, insomnia, and even foster creativity and joy.

Sustainable Growth and Employee Ownership

GŪD Essence’s operational philosophy centers on sustainable growth rather than aggressive expansion. Johnson measures success not just by the number of dispensaries opened, but by the lives touched, people trained, and doors opened for equity. “We measure success differently,” she asserts.

Accessing capital remains a significant hurdle for Black women entrepreneurs. Johnson creatively financed GŪD Essence with her parents acting as her first investors, leveraging their real estate portfolio. This deep personal investment fuels her drive. To ensure equity extends beyond leadership, she has structured GŪD Essence as an employee-owned company, allowing those who contribute to the business to share in its growth.

Advocacy for Policy Reform

Johnson is also a vocal advocate for policy reform. She calls for rewriting laws that continue to penalize individuals with past cannabis convictions, stating, “No one should be barred from opportunity twice for the same plant.” She also pushes for clearer language in cannabis regulations, advocating for consistent terminology to foster better research, science, and policy development.

I stand on the shoulders of strong people who survived and thrived so that I could be here. GŪD Essence is not just a business — it’s a responsibility to honor those legacies. — Jasmine Johnson

Jasmine Johnson’s vision for GŪD Essence is a powerful example of how business can be a force for positive change, blending entrepreneurial ambition with a deep commitment to social equity and cultural restoration.
