Obamas’ Higher Ground Goes Independent, Exits Netflix

Get ready for a new chapter from the Obamas! Higher Ground, the production company founded by former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama, is shifting gears. After an eight-year exclusive partnership with Netflix, the company is moving towards an independent operating model, signaling a desire for greater creative freedom.

A Strategic Pivot to Independence

Barack Obama himself announced the strategic shift during a prominent summit in Philadelphia, which was held to commemorate the United States’ 250th anniversary. This event brought together a remarkable group of leaders from media, politics, and sports. During a panel discussion, the Obamas shared insights into Higher Ground’s evolution and its upcoming autonomy from the streaming giant.

The initial producing deal with Netflix began in 2018, and it evolved into a multiyear first-look agreement in 2024. However, this new transition reflects a strategic move to gain more flexibility in an increasingly competitive and consolidating media market. “We are in the process now of transitioning to a more independent [company] where we can work with a bunch of different studios,” the former president explained.

Expanding Creative Horizons

While expressing gratitude for Netflix’s role in launching Higher Ground, Obama emphasized that the move toward independence will allow the company to diversify its distribution partners. The Obamas’ tenure at Netflix was marked by significant critical success, including the Oscar-winning documentary *American Factory* and Academy Award-nominated projects like *Rustin*, *American Symphony*, and *Crip Camp*. They also produced the scripted thriller *Leave the World Behind* and the dark comedy series *Bodkin*.

This pivot is already leading to new ventures outside the Netflix umbrella. Higher Ground has recently greenlit an HBO sketch comedy series, *Life, Larry, and the Pursuit of Unhappiness*, a collaboration with Larry David and Jeff Schaffer. This project, which had its first look at SXSW, is scheduled for a June release.

A Competitive Bidding Landscape

The Philadelphia event underscored the significant cultural influence behind this announcement, with notable attendees including President Joe Biden, Dr. Jill Biden, Bill and Hillary Clinton, and George W. Bush, alongside industry heavyweights like Tina Fey, Nicole Kidman, Tom Brady, and Jason Kelce. While Higher Ground has not yet formally announced its next primary distribution partner, this shift strongly suggests a competitive bidding environment for the Obamas’ future projects.
