The news of hip-hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa’s passing has brought a mix of reactions. While his immense contributions to the genre are undeniable, many are also recalling the serious allegations of child molestation and sexual assault leveled against him. Among those speaking out is Hassan Campbell, who was once a member of Bambaataa’s Universal Zulu Nation.
A Father Figure with a Dark Secret
Campbell, who looked up to Bambaataa as a father-like figure in his youth, has detailed horrific experiences. He claims that around the age of 13, Bambaataa exposed him to homosexual pornography and allegedly forced him into performing oral sex. Campbell states this was an ongoing issue for several years, continuing even after he served time in jail.
He described the complex relationship, saying, “When I came home from jail, Bam took me shopping and stuff like that. Bam was like your uncle who paid your way through college but molested you.” This duality highlights the profound betrayal Campbell felt.
No Compassion for the Alleged Abuser
Given these deeply personal and disturbing allegations, Campbell expressed little compassion upon hearing of Bambaataa’s death. In a video posted to his Facebook account, Campbell stated, “I just want to take the time out to say rest in peace to the greatest child predator who ever walked this earth, Afrika Bambaataa.”
Campbell’s accusations, along with those from others like political activist Ronald Savage, contributed to Bambaataa’s removal from the Universal Zulu Nation in 2016. Furthermore, a lawsuit filed in 2021 by an anonymous accuser resulted in a default judgment against Bambaataa after he failed to appear in court.
Bambaataa’s Denial and Passing
Throughout the legal proceedings and public accusations, Bambaataa consistently denied the allegations. Reports indicate that he passed away early this morning in Pennsylvania due to complications from cancer.
