‘A Different World’ Sequel Series Premieres Sept. 24

Get ready, Hillman College alumni and new fans alike! Netflix has officially announced the premiere date for its highly anticipated sequel series to the beloved sitcom ‘A Different World.’ Mark your calendars for September 24, 2026 – a date chosen to perfectly coincide with the original show’s 39th anniversary since its debut on NBC in 1987.

A New Generation at Hillman

The streaming giant revealed the exciting news during the American Black Film Festival (ABFF), signaling a perfect moment to honor the original series’ legacy while introducing Hillman to a fresh audience. The new series centers on Deborah, played by the talented Maleah Joi Moon, who is none other than the youngest daughter of iconic fan-favorite couple Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne.

Fans will be thrilled to know that Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison are reprising their legendary roles as Whitley and Dwayne, respectively. As Deborah embarks on her freshman year at Hillman, she’ll face the challenge of stepping out of her famous parents’ shadows while forging her own path, navigating college life, friendships, and all the drama that comes with it.

A Stacked Cast, Old and New

The sequel series boasts an impressive ensemble cast, blending new talent with beloved returning faces. Alongside Maleah Joi Moon, the new student body includes Alijah Kai, Cornell Young IV, Jordan Aaron Hall, Kennedi Reece, Chibuikem Uche, Vincent Jamal Hooper, Elijah J. Behind the scenes, the legacy continues with Debbie Allen, who directed much of the original series, returning as executive producer and director. Felicia Pride serves as showrunner and executive producer, alongside Reggie Rock Bythewood, Gina Prince-Bythewood, Tom Werner, and Mandy Summers.

From Production to Premiere

Netflix officially greenlit the sequel series in 2025, with production for the 10-episode first season wrapping up in April 2026. Now, fans have just a few more months to wait before they can revisit the halls of Hillman College.
