It seems like no one was safe during Jay-Z’s headlining set at the Roots Picnic this past Saturday. While performing a freestyle alongside The Roots, Hov unleashed a barrage of disses aimed at various figures in the music industry, including Drake, Nicki Minaj, and Dame Dash. However, one of his most pointed jabs was directed at Tory Lanez, who is currently serving time behind bars for the shooting of Megan Thee Stallion.
Targeting Tory Lanez from the Stage
A clip shared on Twitter by Complex Music highlighted specific lyrics from the freestyle that seemed tailor-made to mock the incarcerated Canadian artist. Jay-Z rapped, “The Roc’s not crumbling, the leprechauns have magically run out of pranks / Your son on the federal jail-line mumbling something about having, too much in his drink / You know how dumb that is?”
These lines not only appear to be a jab at Tory Lanez’s height but also directly address his father, Sonstar Peterson, and his criticisms of Jay-Z’s companies, Roc Nation. Sonstar had publicly accused Jay’s teams of sabotaging his son’s case. With this response, the Brooklyn mogul seemed to reference a recorded phone call where Tory Lanez allegedly admitted to having too much to drink and offered an apology for the events that transpired, though he didn’t explicitly confess to shooting Megan Thee Stallion.
Fueling Conspiracy Theories?
The question remains whether Tory Lanez or his camp will respond to Jay-Z’s disses, whether through legal channels, from behind bars, or online. For a long time, conspiracy theories have circulated about Jay-Z allegedly manipulating the Tory Lanez case. This freestyle might just add more fuel to that fire.
Beyond Lanez, Jay-Z also took shots at Kanye West, Oschino, Jaguar Wright, and Tony Buzbee, among others. The freestyle has sparked divided reactions online, with some fans praising the performance and others criticizing it – a common occurrence in discussions surrounding Jay-Z.
Looking Ahead
While rumors of new music from Hov continue to circulate, it seems fans are content for now to enjoy the full Roots Picnic performance, especially the memorable freestyle. It’s clear Jay-Z still has plenty to say.
