Former NBA MVP Russell Westbrook is making a significant impact off the court! As Mental Health Awareness Month wraps up, his Why Not? Foundation has launched an exciting initiative to bring mental wellness education and restorative programs to communities in Los Angeles and Altadena.
Community-Focused Wellness Programs
This isn’t just about handing out resources; it’s about building sustainable support systems. The foundation is teaming up with local, women-led grassroots organizations to offer targeted wellness activities for women, youth, and families. This approach moves beyond traditional charity, focusing on community integration and lasting impact.
By partnering with groups like Shepherd’s Door Domestic Violence Resource Center, The Jenesse Center, and Neighborhood Servants, the initiative aims to fill crucial gaps in mental health access. Programs include wellness events, trauma-informed yoga, acupuncture, and Reiki healing sessions, particularly for domestic violence survivors.
Supporting Local Economy and Businesses
The initiative also shines a light on supporting local Black-owned businesses. By incorporating services from these businesses, the foundation ensures that philanthropic efforts also contribute to the local economy. It’s a smart strategy that aligns corporate social responsibility with community development.
Amelia Williamson, managing director of the Why Not? Foundation, emphasized the mission: “May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and partnering with local organizations to provide intentional care, resources, and experiences to some of our most vulnerable community members across Los Angeles and Altadena is central to our mission.”
A Culmination of Fundraising and Advocacy
The initiative culminates with the 4th Annual Mental Health & Wellness Brunch Fundraiser, co-hosted by Nina Westbrook. Titled “Rooted: Wellness That Runs Deep,” this event is the foundation’s main fundraiser for its mental health programs. It brings together corporate, philanthropic, and cultural leaders to discuss mental health advocacy as a vital component of modern leadership.
Since its founding in 2012, Russell Westbrook’s foundation has evolved significantly. It now focuses on workforce development and improving access to health resources, proving how athlete-led initiatives can create substantial social and economic change.
