The vibrant nightlife scene in Atlanta is reeling from the tragic loss of Sharell Canty, a prominent figure and co-owner of the popular Opium nightclub. Canty was fatally shot in a domestic-related incident, sending shockwaves through the city’s entertainment community.
A Life Cut Short
Gwinnett County police confirmed that Canty, 44, was shot at a home in Grayson, Georgia, on Sunday, May 24. According to arrest warrants obtained by 11 Alive, she was shot twice in the head. Authorities have classified the case as a domestic-related homicide.
A neighbor discovered Canty’s body on Sunday morning and alerted authorities. Police identified 48-year-old Stephany Byrom as a suspect and arrested her the same day. Byrom faces charges including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. She is currently in custody at Gwinnett County Jail. The exact relationship between Canty and Byrom has not yet been publicly disclosed as the investigation continues.
Remembering Sharell Canty
Friends and colleagues remember Canty for her commanding presence and sharp business instincts. “Sharell has her own aura, and when she walks into a club, everybody knows Sharell’s here,” shared friend and co-worker Tejai Henry. Henry also praised her business acumen, noting, “She knew how to run a business, she knew what to do to keep the business going.”
Former WNBA player Tamera Young expressed her grief on Facebook, calling Canty “one of my favorite people” and a “real one, a good one, a heart of gold.” Young lamented that her last dinner with Canty would be their final time together.
Keeping Her Legacy Alive
Those who loved Canty are determined to honor her memory by continuing the work she dedicated herself to. “Sharell gonna tell us to party and ball like she’s still here,” Henry said. “We’re going to keep her legacy alive. We’re gonna keep Opium alive.”
Authorities have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat, stating that the incident is believed to be isolated. Sgt. Jennifer Richter of the Gwinnett County Police Department commented, “Right now, we do believe that this was an isolated incident, so there should be no concern for the public at this time.”
