Basketball legend Carmelo Anthony is making a major power play, moving beyond the court and into the cutting edge of artificial intelligence. His production company, Creative 7 Productions, has just inked a strategic partnership with Utopai Studios, aiming to revolutionize how athletes create and own their entertainment ventures.
From Athlete to Studio Mogul with AI
This collaboration signals a significant shift in how sports figures leverage their personal brands. Instead of just being the face of a project, athletes are increasingly seeking equity, creative control, and ownership of intellectual property. Anthony’s move with Utopai Studios, which utilizes its proprietary cinematic storytelling AI called PAI, allows athletes to develop, own, and scale original entertainment properties like never before.
Carmelo Anthony stated, “Sports has always been grounded in real human stories that can translate to powerful entertainment IP, but bringing those stories to life hasn’t always been easy. PAI changes that. It gives us a more accessible way to create and build something with long-term value.” This partnership aims to build an asset-heavy model, empowering athletes to become true media moguls.
Democratizing Content Creation
Traditionally, creating high-quality film and television content required substantial capital, large teams, and lengthy production cycles. Utopai’s AI-driven tools offer a more scalable and efficient alternative. This democratizes the process, making it feasible for both active and retired athletes to launch media ventures without massive budgets.
Anthony, along with Creative 7 co-founder Asani Swann, will lead the charge in recruiting other professional athletes to join this tech-focused ecosystem. Their first project? An anime-inspired entertainment property based on Anthony’s own career, legacy, and basketball culture, complete with a short-form series and behind-the-scenes content.
Global Reach and IP Protection
In today’s global market, athletes have worldwide brands, but traditional localization processes can be slow and fragmented. Utopai’s existing international operations in Germany and South Korea will enable this venture to deliver content, like the planned anime series, to global audiences quickly and in localized formats. Crucially, this AI-powered model prioritizes athlete authorship and ownership, addressing concerns about AI replacing creators by ensuring they retain control.
We are building a new studio system for the AI era, one that gives creators, athletes, and talent a more direct path to develop original IP while preserving authorship, ownership, and creative control. — Cecilia Shen, Co-founder and CEO of Utopai Studios
This initiative reinforces the trend of elite athletes becoming sophisticated business leaders. By embracing technology and AI, athletes like Anthony are redefining their post-career pathways, moving into venture capital, intellectual property ownership, and technological innovation. This high-tech evolution of the traditional studio system could reshape the sports industry, encouraging more athletes to pursue business and tech ventures.
