Byron Allen Takes Over BuzzFeed as CEO

Get ready for a major shake-up in the digital media world! Byron Allen, the media mogul behind Allen Family Digital, has officially closed a significant deal, securing a majority investment in BuzzFeed. This move means Allen is stepping into the big chair as the new chairman and CEO of BuzzFeed, effective immediately.

A New Era for BuzzFeed and HuffPost

This isn’t just about BuzzFeed; the deal also brings the Huffington Post under Allen’s umbrella, as BuzzFeed acquired it back in 2021. With Allen Family Digital now owning approximately 52% of the company’s shares, it’s clear this is a pivotal moment for both iconic digital brands. The acquisition was first announced on May 11th, setting the stage for this exciting transition.

What does this mean for the future? Allen has big plans! He’s expressed his admiration for BuzzFeed’s co-founder and former CEO, Jonah Peretti, who will be transitioning to a new role focusing on AI at BuzzFeed. Allen envisions expanding BuzzFeed and HuffPost into new territories, including free-streaming video, audio content, and user-generated material.

Chasing YouTube and Expanding the Empire

Allen is ambitious, stating that with the power of AI, BuzzFeed is now aiming to become a premier free video streaming service, much like YouTube. This strategic move leverages BuzzFeed’s existing tens of millions of monthly visitors and integrates them with Allen’s diverse media portfolio.

His current holdings are impressive, including Local Now, a free streaming platform for local news and entertainment, and The Weather Channel. Plus, Allen’s “Comics Unleashed” recently took over a CBS timeslot previously held by “The Late Show Starring Stephen Colbert,” showcasing his growing influence.

Beyond BuzzFeed: The Starz Ambitions

The BuzzFeed acquisition is just one piece of Allen’s expanding media empire. He’s also got his sights set on acquiring the premium cable network Starz. He’s already invested significantly, aiming to control both subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) and advertising video-on-demand (AVOD) platforms.

When I decide to buy the whole company — I will buy the whole company — I do plan on controlling Starz. I want two streaming platforms. One that’s SVOD (subscription video on-demand), and one that’s AVOD (advertising video on-demand). — Byron Allen

Allen believes BuzzFeed and HuffPost will form the core of his AVOD strategy, offering free streaming content, while Starz would fulfill his SVOD ambitions. He’s determined to make this vision a reality, even navigating contractual complexities like a “poison pill” defense.
