In a development that brings a heartbreaking, yet potentially conclusive, turn to a nearly three-year-old case, South Carolina authorities believe they may have found the remains of Krystal Anderson. The mother of four vanished without a trace in August 2022, leaving her family desperate for answers.
A Devastating Discovery
On May 20, 2026, Aiken County deputies discovered human remains buried near Highway 37 in Blackville. While official DNA testing is still pending, those closest to Krystal are convinced the remains belong to her. Private investigator Chandra Cleveland, who has been working with Anderson’s family, stated that belongings found with the remains were identical to Krystal’s.
This discovery, though deeply sorrowful, offers a sense of closure that Anderson’s family has been seeking for over three and a half years. “Of course, it was devastating. It’s just like the first day it happened when she went missing,” Cleveland shared. “Maybe now we can give her a final resting place and her children will be able to deal with the fact that their mother is not coming back.”
The Investigation and Arrest
Krystal Anderson was officially reported missing on August 23, 2022, after she failed to pick up her son from school, an act completely out of character for the devoted mother. Her sister, Shadria Smothers, emphasized that Krystal always maintained contact and was incredibly close with her family.
Suspicion quickly fell on her then-boyfriend, Tony Berry. Shortly after Anderson’s disappearance, his burned car was found abandoned. An arrest warrant later detailed investigators’ belief that Anderson was killed on the night of August 20, 2022, following a reported argument with Berry. Witnesses allegedly saw him place her into the trunk of his vehicle.
Evidence and Procedural Developments
The case against Berry was built on a combination of evidence, including cellphone tracking data, internet search history, and witness accounts. Authorities alleged that Berry purchased items such as a gas-powered auger, shovel, and protective gear, believed to be used in the disposal of human remains. Further evidence suggested Berry and his son were in the area at the time, and that Berry had researched methods to commit the crime without leaving a trace.
Tony Berry had been scheduled to stand trial next week for charges related to Anderson’s alleged kidnapping and murder. However, with the discovery of the remains and ongoing procedural developments, prosecutor Weeks confirmed the trial has been postponed.
