The internet is buzzing, and this time it’s over a modified album cover! Drake’s latest project, “ICEMAN,” has certainly stirred up a lot of conversation, and not all of it has been positive. While fans are fiercely defending the Toronto rapper, industry peers and critics are weighing in, and legendary West Coast artist DJ Quik has just added his two cents in a rather pointed way.
A “Corny” Take on “ICEMAN”
Drake’s “ICEMAN” album cover features his hand, adorned with a sparkling, rhinestone glove, throwing up the ‘6.’ Many saw this as a nod to Michael Jackson, suggesting Drake sees himself in the same league as the King of Pop. Social media has been flooded with recreations of this iconic pose.
However, DJ Quik’s version is a clear departure. He took the “ICEMAN” cover art and swapped out the flashy glove for ears of corn. This subtle, yet significant, change didn’t go unnoticed. The internet quickly interpreted this as Quik calling Drake “corny” or a “cornball,” a diss that’s hard to ignore in the rap world.
The Beef Lingers On
This move by DJ Quik comes amid the ongoing fallout from Drake’s highly publicized beef with Kendrick Lamar. While Drake did address Lamar on wax, many felt his response came too late, especially with the West Coast largely siding with Kendrick. Quik, being a prominent figure from Compton, seems to be drawing a line in the sand, signaling that the beef isn’t entirely settled for everyone.
Of course, Drake’s loyal fanbase has been quick to defend him, clapping back at the criticism. But DJ Quik’s edited cover art adds another layer to the narrative, suggesting that even established artists are taking sides and making their opinions known through creative, and sometimes pointed, gestures.
What do you think of DJ Quik’s edited “ICEMAN” cover? Do you think it’s a fair diss, or is it just adding fuel to the fire? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
