A routine late-night stop in the heart of Midtown Manhattan turned into a devastating tragedy Monday night. A woman tragically lost her life after stepping out of her SUV and falling into an uncovered manhole, a shocking incident that has raised serious questions about public safety.
A Fatal Misstep
The incident occurred around 11:20 PM near the bustling intersection of 52nd Street and Fifth Avenue, an area known for its high-end retail stores like Cartier and Nike. According to authorities, 56-year-old Donike Gocaj, from Briarcliff Manor in Westchester County, had just parked her Mercedes-Benz SUV.
As she stepped onto the pavement, she unknowingly walked into a gaping, unprotected utility hole. The fall was approximately 10 feet deep. First responders arrived quickly after receiving a 911 call, but tragically, Gocaj was found unconscious and unresponsive at the bottom of the pit. Despite being rushed to NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, she was pronounced dead.
Outrage Over Lack of Safety Measures
Family members who rushed to the scene expressed shock and anger over the apparent lack of basic safety precautions. Gocaj’s daughter-in-law confirmed the family’s devastation and pointed out the complete absence of cones, warning signs, or barriers around the open manhole. This lack of protection is particularly concerning given the location’s high traffic of both pedestrians and vehicles.
Con Edison released a statement expressing their deep sadness and confirming an active investigation into how the disaster occurred. They stated that safety remains their top priority. However, the question remains: how could a utility hole in such a prominent, high-end location be left open and unprotected late at night?
An Ongoing Investigation
The Medical Examiner’s office is currently working to determine the official cause of Donike Gocaj’s death. Meanwhile, city officials and Con Edison face the difficult task of explaining how a seemingly ordinary night out in Manhattan resulted in such a freak and fatal accident. This incident serves as a stark reminder to always be aware of your surroundings, especially in urban environments.
