It’s a major milestone moment for Tyrese Gibson and his daughter, Shayla! The actor and singer recently celebrated his eldest daughter, Shayla Gibson, as she attended her prom. Now, the 18-year-old is gearing up for another significant chapter: heading off to college on a full-ride scholarship.

On May 17, Tyrese took to Instagram to share an emotional tribute to Shayla, evoking memories of his viral 2017 “My Shayla” video, which became a cultural touchstone during his public custody battle. Videos from prom night showed Tyrese actively involved, from adjusting Shayla’s date’s tie to making last-minute adjustments to her dress.

A Father’s Heartfelt Tribute

“#MyShayla changed my life forever,” Tyrese captioned his post, addressing his daughter directly with words of encouragement. He urged her to “Walk in your audacity. Walk in your grace. Walk in your brilliance. Walk in your softness and your power at the same time.” He emphasized her intelligence, resilience, and kindness, calling them her “magic.”

The “Sweet Lady” singer described Shayla as the heir to the “Gibson legacy and empire” he’s been building. He reflected deeply on his journey as a father, calling himself a “survivor of family court, divorce, public judgment, private pain…” but stressed that he “never stopped showing up as a PRESENT father.” He credits consistency, prayer, sacrifice, and faith for the successful outcome, standing proudly beside the “fruit of that labor.”

Embracing the ‘Empty Nester’ Phase

Tyrese admitted to feeling both nervous and excited about sending Shayla off to college. In another heartfelt Instagram post on May 18, shared from the airport, he opened up about officially becoming an “empty nester” as graduation approaches. He’s even put his Los Angeles house up for sale, signaling a significant life change.

He acknowledged that life will be very different, but expressed confidence in Shayla’s upbringing. “She wasn’t raised to believe most of what she hears, far from gullible and or stupid,” he stated, highlighting the luxurious lifestyle she’s known but emphasizing that material possessions won’t impress her. “Her daddy has created a very high standard.” He believes only “heart, integrity and a beautiful soul” will impress his daughter.

Tyrese also recently reflected on the emotional “My Shayla” video during an appearance on Angie Martinez’s IRL Podcast. He revealed he was experiencing withdrawal from psychiatric medication at the time, which intensified his emotions. While the road to 50/50 joint custody was difficult, he now finds comfort in how the once-painful moment has evolved into something wholesome online, seeing it as a testament to connection and God’s sense of humor.
