In a surprising turn of events, Kim Kardashian’s popular shapewear brand, SKIMS, finds itself indirectly linked to a major international drug bust. British authorities recently intercepted a shipment containing millions of dollars worth of cocaine, and the drugs were discovered hidden within a consignment of SKIMS merchandise.
Understandably, the brand is moving quickly to distance itself from the criminal activity. A representative for SKIMS has issued a clear statement emphasizing their complete lack of involvement and knowledge regarding the smuggling operation.
The Details of the Bust
The incident came to light when UK Border Force officers intercepted a truck at the Port of Harwich in Essex. The truck, driven by 40-year-old Polish national Jakub Jan Konkel, was carrying 28 pallets of what appeared to be legitimate SKIMS clothing from the Netherlands to England.
However, a closer inspection revealed a hidden compartment near the trailer’s rear doors. Inside, investigators found 90 packages of cocaine, with an estimated street value of approximately £7 million, or about $9.4 million USD. Authorities confirmed that the SKIMS products themselves were not illegal and that neither the exporter nor importer of the clothing had any connection to the drug operation.
SKIMS’ Official Statement
In a statement to TMZ, a SKIMS spokesperson was unequivocal: “The company had ‘no knowledge whatsoever about this criminal activity.’” They further stressed that the brand has “no connection to the smuggling operation, the driver, or the truck.”
Konkel, the truck driver, initially denied any knowledge of the drugs but later confessed to agreeing to transport them for a fee of around €4,500 (approximately $5,300 USD). Investigators believe the cocaine was loaded into the truck during an undisclosed stop along its route, using tracking data to pinpoint the location.
SKIMS: A Growing Fashion Powerhouse
Founded by Kim Kardashian in 2019, SKIMS has rapidly evolved from a shapewear line into a global fashion brand. Its expansion into menswear, swimwear, and high-profile retail partnerships underscores its significant impact on the industry. This incident, while unfortunate, highlights the challenges faced by even the most reputable brands in complex global supply chains.
