Chiefs WR Rashee Rice’s THC Test Leads to Jail Time

It looks like Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice’s second chance is slipping away. After a positive THC test, he was booked into Dallas County Jail on Tuesday afternoon. This triggered an immediate 30-day jail sentence that was previously deferred, stemming from a serious 2024 street racing incident. This latest development puts his entire future, including his NFL career, in jeopardy.

The Plea Deal and Its Consequences

This 30-day jail term isn’t a new sentence; it’s a consequence of a plea deal Rice struck in July 2025. He pleaded guilty to two felony charges: collision involving serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing bodily injury. The deal offered him a path to clear his record through five years of deferred adjudication probation. However, testing positive for THC has now put that probation, and the potential clearing of his record, at serious risk.

The original incident dates back to March 2024. Rice was reportedly driving erratically at speeds nearing 120 mph on a Dallas highway, causing a multi-car crash. He left the scene before authorities arrived, only taking responsibility weeks later in a public statement. The crash left four people injured, and Rice was ordered to cover over $115,000 in medical expenses for the victims.

NFL Suspension and Further Legal Battles

This isn’t the first time Rice has faced consequences for his actions. The NFL had already handed him a six-game suspension for the start of the 2025 season due to violations of the league’s personal conduct policy. When asked about Rice’s recent jail booking, an NFL spokesperson offered a brief, standard response: ‘We are aware of the report and will decline further comment at this time.’

Beyond the criminal charges, Rice is also entangled in civil lawsuits. A trial for the crash-related civil suit is scheduled for June 9. Additionally, his former partner, Dacoda Jones, has filed a separate lawsuit seeking over $1 million, alleging a pattern of physical abuse. These legal entanglements add significant pressure to an already precarious situation.

Impact on His Career and Future

Rice is expected to be released from jail on June 16. However, this jail stay means he’ll miss crucial team activities, including the Chiefs’ OTAs and mandatory minicamp. As he enters the final year of his rookie contract, these missed opportunities could significantly impact his future with the team and in the league. The Chiefs organization has not yet released an official statement regarding this latest development.
