Shaquille O’Neal Earns Master’s Degree from LSU

Talk about a slam dunk for education! NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal has added another impressive accomplishment to his already stellar career: a Master of Liberal Arts degree from Louisiana State University (LSU). He officially graduated on Saturday, May 18, 2026, during the university’s commencement ceremony in Baton Rouge.

Back to Where It All Began

The ceremony took place at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center, the very same arena where Shaq once dominated the college basketball court. Receiving his graduate degree from LSU’s College of Humanities & Social Sciences marks a full-circle moment for the former LSU superstar.

During the commencement, Shaq also took the stage to address the graduating class. He shared his own journey, emphasizing the importance of perseverance, continuous growth, and the lasting value of education, even beyond professional success.

A Legacy at LSU

Shaq’s connection with LSU spans decades, beginning when he played for the Tigers under coach Dale Brown from 1989 to 1992. During his three seasons, he amassed an incredible 1,941 career points and 1,217 rebounds, solidifying his place among the program’s all-time leaders.

His collegiate achievements were widely recognized; he was named Associated Press Player of the Year in 1991 before being selected as the No. 1 overall NBA Draft pick in 1992. LSU has continued to honor him, retiring his iconic No. 33 jersey in 2000 and erecting a statue outside the arena in 2011.

Lifelong Advocate for Education

Beyond his legendary basketball career, Shaq has built a successful path in broadcasting, business, and entertainment. Crucially, he has remained a passionate advocate for education, consistently encouraging young athletes to prioritize their academic pursuits alongside their sports careers.

This isn’t Shaq’s first foray into higher education post-basketball. In 2012, he earned a doctorate in education (Ed.D) in organizational learning and leadership from Barry University. Today, the four-time NBA champion continues his work as a basketball analyst while actively pursuing his business ventures and philanthropic efforts.
