Talk about a power duo graduating on the same day! Basketball icons Shaquille O’Neal and Flau’Jae Johnson both walked across the stage at Louisiana State University (LSU) to receive their degrees, marking a memorable day for the university and its star alumni.
For Shaquille O’Neal, this wasn’t just any graduation; it was his second degree from LSU. He previously earned his Bachelor’s degree back in 2000, the same night his jersey was retired. This latest achievement sees the NBA legend adding a Master’s degree to his impressive academic portfolio.
Shaq’s Commitment to Education
Shaq’s dedication to higher education is truly inspiring, especially given his immense success as a businessman and athlete. He holds a Doctoral degree from Barry University and has now completed an additional 54 credit hours at LSU for his Master’s, maintaining an impressive 3.813 GPA. His coursework involved a mix of in-person and remote learning, proving his commitment.
Even with millions in the bank, O’Neal has consistently emphasized the importance of education. His academic journey at LSU is a testament to his belief that learning doesn’t stop, even after achieving legendary status in sports.
Flau’Jae Johnson’s Stellar Achievement
Sharing the graduation stage was none other than rising basketball star Flau’Jae Johnson. The talented athlete earned her degree from LSU just ahead of embarking on her WNBA career with the Seattle Storm, who drafted her as the No. 8 overall pick.
Johnson’s collegiate career was nothing short of spectacular, including a National Championship win and becoming a top earner in Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals. She’s a strong advocate for athletes leveraging NIL opportunities, stating, “You only get four years. Those four years could set you up for the next 40 years. Be smart with it and use it to your advantage.”
More Than Just Athletes
Beyond their athletic prowess, both Shaq and Flau’Jae share a connection to LSU and a passion for their respective rap careers. Flau’Jae, who competed on “America’s Got Talent” and won “The Rap Game,” signed with Roc Nation in 2024, showcasing her multifaceted talents.
Her journey is a powerful example of how athletes can successfully navigate business opportunities alongside their sports careers, proving critics wrong and paving the way for future generations. She often credits her mother, Kia Brooks, for her unwavering support and management.
