Shaq Revitalizes Reebok: A New Era of Basketball

Remember Reebok? That iconic sneaker brand is experiencing a major comeback, and a huge part of that resurgence is thanks to NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal. Since taking the helm as the first-ever President of Reebok Basketball in 2023, Shaq has been injecting new energy and strategic vision into the company.

Shaq’s Strategic Vision for Reebok

It’s more than just a title for Shaq; he’s also the second-largest individual shareholder in Authentic Brands Group (ABG), the parent company that acquired Reebok from Adidas for $2.5 billion in March 2022. This deep involvement means he’s personally invested in seeing Reebok thrive, especially in the sports arena.

When ABG CEO Jamie Salter noted that much of their portfolio leaned towards ‘classics’ and ‘fashion,’ Shaq was quick to steer the ship back towards sports. He reportedly told Salter, ‘You look after that piece of the puzzle, I’ll look after the sports side.’ This clear focus has paid off, with Reebok now making strides back into basketball, soccer, and football.

Focusing on Youth and Cultural Relevance

A key part of Shaq’s strategy involves connecting with a younger generation. He spearheaded Reebok’s first NIL deal by signing then-LSU star Angel Reese. This move signals a clear intent to compete with giants like Nike and Jordan Brand by signing athletes who are not only talented but also culturally relevant.

Shaq himself described the brand’s resurgence as ‘fun,’ highlighting their strategic approach to content and athlete selection. He’s passionate about reintroducing Reebok to younger audiences, often using familiar icons like Allen Iverson to bridge the gap. ‘We just do things that are very, very strategic,’ Shaq explained, noting the business has already doubled and plans for continued growth are in place.

The ‘Return of the Classics’ Campaign

Under Shaq’s leadership, Reebok is also embracing its heritage. The ‘Return of the Classics’ campaign is reproducing beloved vintage styles, including the ‘Shaq Attack’ and Allen Iverson’s signature ‘Question’ shoe. This blend of new talent and classic designs is proving to be a winning formula for the brand.
