85-Year-Old Earns Doctorate from TSU

Talk about an inspiration! Charles Whitman Dabbs is proving that age is truly just a number when it comes to achieving your dreams. This incredible individual has just earned his Doctorate Degree from Tennessee State University, and get this – he’s 85 years old! His journey is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to hit the books and chase higher education.

A Lifetime of Service and Learning

Charles’s path to this remarkable achievement is as fascinating as it is inspiring. After graduating high school in 1958, he joined the Navy at just 17, embarking on a distinguished 50-year career in federal service. He’s worked with the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense, and even served as a drug counselor and mental health worker.

But his thirst for knowledge didn’t stop there! Over the years, Charles earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology and two master’s degrees from UCLA. It just goes to show that a curious mind never quits.

Embracing Technology and Intergenerational Connections

Fueled by the desire to continue learning, Charles decided to pursue a doctorate in the wake of COVID-19. He began taking online courses at Tennessee State University, embracing the digital classroom. He shared that his younger classmates were incredibly supportive, especially when it came to navigating technology.

Charles noted a beautiful connection formed with his younger peers. While they helped him with the tech side of things, he shared his unique perspectives from living through historical events they had only read about. It was a wonderful exchange of knowledge and experience.

A Doctorate in Higher Education Leadership

Now, at 85, Charles Whitman Dabbs has officially earned his Doctor of Education degree, specializing in higher education leadership. He was among nearly 1,400 graduates celebrating their accomplishments at Tennessee State University. This achievement is a testament to his dedication and perseverance.

I thought I might be overlooked, but it was just the opposite. The students embraced me. They helped me with technology, and in return, I shared perspectives from living through history they had only read about in textbooks. Charles hopes his journey inspires others who might feel they are coming from non-traditional backgrounds or that it’s too late to pursue further education. With his background as a social worker, he’s always been driven to motivate people, and his own life is now a powerful example of that.

Looking ahead, Charles has his sights set on becoming a professor of sociology at a Historically Black College and University (HBCU), sharing his wisdom and experience with the next generation.
