Former President Barack Obama is speaking out against Donald Trump’s use of an AI-generated video that depicted the Obamas as apes. While Obama is no stranger to political attacks, he’s made it clear that targeting his family in such a dehumanizing way crosses a critical line, even for political rivals.
A Line Drawn at Family
In a recent interview with Variety, Obama stated, “I don’t take it personally… I’m always offended when my wife and kids get dragged into things, because they didn’t choose this.” He emphasized that this is a boundary he expects even those with opposing political views to respect, adding, “I would never talk about somebody’s family in that way.”
Obama explained that while he’s a “fair target” for political criticism, the AI video represented a disturbing erosion of decency and respect in public discourse. He stressed that using historically racist tropes to dehumanize Black individuals is unacceptable, regardless of political differences.
The AI Video and Its Fallout
The AI-generated clip, which Trump posted on his Truth Social platform, was part of a longer video promoting false claims about the 2020 election. Although the segment featuring the Obamas was brief, it immediately drew widespread condemnation from politicians across the aisle and civil rights groups, who recognized its connection to harmful, bigoted stereotypes.
Despite the backlash, Trump reportedly refused to apologize, downplaying the video and claiming ignorance of its specific content. His supporters also largely dismissed the criticism, framing the imagery as a harmless meme rather than a serious, offensive statement.
Concerns Over AI in Politics
President Obama used the incident to voice his growing concerns about the role of artificial intelligence in politics. He warned that AI-generated media, especially when wielded by influential figures, can easily spread misinformation, reinforce harmful stereotypes, and further damage already fragile public trust. The use of such technology in political discourse raises serious questions about the future of truth and accountability.
