After a distinguished career leading BET, former CEO Debra Lee is embarking on a new, deeply personal venture: launching her own luxury handbag collection. This pivot from the boardroom to the design studio marks a significant new chapter, fulfilling a lifelong passion for fashion and empowering accomplished women.

Unveiled on April 29th, ‘The Debra Lee Collection’ features four distinct styles: the Debi, Ava, Billie Mini, and Quinn. Each handbag is meticulously crafted from sustainable calf leather in Italy, designed with the modern, ambitious woman in mind. The collection aims to offer pieces that are both beautiful and functional, seamlessly transitioning through every facet of a woman’s dynamic life.

Lee described the collection as a “meaningful pivot” in her life. “After decades spent building organizations and supporting culture and creativity through my work, this is an opportunity to create something personal,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “More than that, I hope it inspires women to follow their passions, even if the path isn’t always direct.”

A Dream Realized: From Seamstresses to CEO

This venture is rooted in a dream Lee first harbored in college, influenced by her grandmothers, who were seamstresses, and her mother, who taught her to sew. While her career path led her to executive leadership in media—joining BET in 1986 and eventually becoming Chairman and CEO until 2018—her passion for fashion never faded. “Life took me on a different path, one I’m deeply grateful for, but that dream never left me,” she shared on Instagram.

The handbags, priced between $900 and $2,300, are designed to be both stylish and practical. Lee emphasized the importance of craftsmanship, noting, “My mother taught me to sew. Both of my grandmothers were seamstresses. Craftsmanship has always been part of who I am.” This collection represents a deeply personal creation, born from a lifelong connection to fashion and a desire to take a fulfilling risk.

Currently serving on the boards of major companies like Warner Bros.
