Kimmel Responds to Trump’s Calls for Firing

Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel is refusing to back down amidst intense pressure from Donald Trump and Melania Trump, who are demanding ABC fire him. The controversy ignited after a joke Kimmel made on his show, which was followed by a security incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

The Joke That Sparked Outrage

The friction began when Kimmel aired a parody roast on April 23rd. In it, he described Melania Trump as having a “glow like an expectant widow.” Kimmel clarified on his Monday monologue that this was intended as a lighthearted jab at the age difference and public dynamic between Donald and Melania, not a call for violence. He emphasized his long-standing stance against gun violence.

However, the situation escalated dramatically after a gunman was intercepted at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday, April 25th. This event seemed to amplify the Trumps’ reaction to Kimmel’s earlier remarks.

Trump and Melania Demand Action

Following the dinner incident, Donald Trump took to Truth Social, labeling Kimmel’s “widow” comment “shocking” and “despicable.” He declared the monologue “something far beyond the pale” and demanded that ABC and Disney immediately fire the late-night host. Melania Trump echoed these sentiments on X (formerly Twitter), calling Kimmel a “coward” and urging the network to “take a stand” against what she termed “hateful and violent rhetoric.”

Kimmel’s Rebuttal

Kimmel, however, remained unfazed. He pointed out the absurdity of connecting a pre-recorded comedy sketch from three days prior to a violent act that occurred later. He even played a clip of Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt using the phrase “shots fired” when discussing the dinner, highlighting the media’s own language.

Addressing Melania directly, Kimmel offered a blend of sincerity and sarcasm. He expressed sympathy for the traumatic experience at the dinner but questioned the logic of linking his joke to the event. “But if you want us to believe that a joke I made three days before this dinner had any effect on anything that happened, well maybe you should look into this psychic lady, too,” he quipped.

The Monologue’s Content

The specific monologue that drew the Trumps’ ire also included jabs at Donald Trump’s age and his past association with Jeffrey Epstein. Kimmel had also joked about Melania spending her birthday “looking out a window and whispering, ‘What have I done?’”

Despite the White House’s continued pressure, ABC has yet to announce any disciplinary actions against Kimmel, who has been a prominent figure on the network for years.
