Ever feel like your Instagram feed is more about performance than genuine connection? Instagram might have a solution. They’ve quietly launched a new app called Instants, currently being tested in Spain and Italy, designed for those quick, unpolished moments you might not typically share.
What is Instants?
Instants is all about simplicity and spontaneity. The app encourages users to capture photos in real-time using its in-app camera – no uploads from your camera roll allowed! This means no carefully selected throwbacks, just what’s happening right now. You can add text, but forget about filters or editing tools; the focus is purely on capturing the moment.
The photos, called “instants,” are designed to be viewed only once and disappear after 24 hours. This ephemeral nature is reminiscent of apps like Snapchat and BeReal, which have gained popularity by offering a more casual and less performative social media experience.
A Shift Away from Polished Content
Instagram’s main platform has evolved significantly over the years, shifting from a space for everyday life updates to a hub for influencers, brands, and highly curated aesthetics. Instants seems like a strategic move to recapture that sense of private, low-pressure interaction among friends.
Instagram has previously tested similar features within its main app, but exploring Instants as a standalone product suggests a strong belief in this more casual approach. Content can be shared with mutual followers or your Close Friends list, mirroring existing connection structures.
The Future of Casual Sharing?
The big question remains: do people really want another social media app? Instagram is clearly betting on the demand for smaller, more intimate social circles and content that doesn’t need to be perfect. By offering a space for disappearing photos, they’re aiming to bring back the fun and spontaneity that made early social media so engaging.
