Toronto Mayor Excited for Drake’s ‘ICEMAN’ Album

The anticipation for Drake’s upcoming album, ‘ICEMAN,’ is reaching a fever pitch, and it’s not just fans who are excited. Even Toronto’s Mayor, Olivia Chow, has weighed in, expressing her enthusiasm for the new project while addressing the recent controversy surrounding the album’s promotional ice sculpture.

Mayor Chow’s Support for Safety

During a press conference on Wednesday morning, Mayor Chow acknowledged the buzz surrounding Drake’s ‘ICEMAN’ album, set to drop on Friday, May 15th. She shared her own excitement, stating, “Drake is a big supporter of our city, and there’s so much excitement across our city towards this new Drake album, The Iceman. I’m excited too.”

However, her support for the artist didn’t extend to the promotional stunt that accompanied the album’s announcement. The city’s Fire Chief, Jim Jessop, made the decision to dismantle the large ice sculpture installation due to safety concerns. Chow publicly backed this decision, emphasizing the importance of public safety. “The fire chief made the decision last night, and I support his decisions. His responsibility is people’s safety,” she told reporters.

The Unsafe Ice Sculpture Saga

The ice sculpture, unveiled by Drake in his hometown on Monday, was intended to hide the album’s release date within its icy blocks. This creative promotion quickly led to fans flocking to the site with tools like ice picks and torches, attempting to speed up the melting process. This resulted in dangerous and unsafe activities, prompting the Fire Department’s intervention.

Fire Chief Jessop confirmed the installation was taken down under the Fire Protection and Prevention Act due to “dangerous and unsafe activities.” He stated, “As Toronto’s Fire Chief, my top priority is keeping Torontonians safe. Large numbers of individuals [had] gathered to attempt to melt the ice using flammable liquids, and open flames in an uncontrolled environment which results in an immediate threat to life.”

Finding the Release Date

Despite the controversy surrounding the ice sculpture, the release date was eventually discovered. Live streamer Kishka found a blue bag containing the crucial information within the melting ice. Drake’s ‘ICEMAN’ is officially set to drop on May 15th. While details about the tracklist remain scarce, fans can anticipate the project, which follows his 2024 feud with Kendrick Lamar and includes previously released singles like “What Did I Miss?,” “Which One” (featuring Central Cee), and “Dog House” (featuring Yeat and Julia Wolf).
