In a significant crackdown on welfare fraud, two Mississippi women have been sentenced for their involvement in separate schemes that defrauded the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) of over $122,000. Katrina Harris and Lashonda Smith reached plea agreements in their respective cases, highlighting the ongoing efforts to combat benefit abuse.
Details of the Fraudulent Schemes
According to the Mississippi Department of Human Services (MDHS), Katrina Harris improperly received $69,881 in SNAP benefits. Investigators found that she failed to report her earned income and her residence, leading to the overpayment. Lashonda Smith, in a separate case, also failed to accurately report her household income, resulting in her improperly receiving $52,053 in benefits.
Both women were sentenced to five years of probation. Additionally, they have been ordered to pay fines, fees, and restitution totaling $123,534.00. Harris’s case began in 2024, following a March indictment, after which she turned herself in to authorities.
Government Efforts to Combat SNAP Fraud
These sentences come as law enforcement agencies intensify their efforts to prevent the abuse of SNAP and other federal benefits. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the agency overseeing SNAP, has been particularly active. Since October 1, 2025, the USDA has disqualified 1,562 retailers associated with fraud and disabled 760 illegal point-of-sale devices, preventing nearly $835 million in fraudulent transactions.
Deputy Secretary Stephen Vaden issued a stern warning via X: “Commit fraud? We will find you and hold you accountable. Including jail time.” He emphasized a government-wide effort, led by the Vice President and the Federal Trade Commission, to root out abuse in programs designed to help vulnerable populations. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins also announced that authorities have targeted over 20 SNAP retailers accused of fraud, issuing administrative charges and criminal warrants.
Retailers found to be committing fraud face severe consequences, including permanent disqualification from the program, substantial fines, and potential prison time. The message from authorities is clear: stealing from those in need and from taxpayers will not be tolerated.
