The recent tragic loss of Dr. Cerina Wanzer Fairfax has brought renewed attention to the devastating impact of domestic violence. However, those who knew her are emphasizing that her life was defined by far more than the circumstances of her death or her role as the wife of former Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax.
An Accomplished Professional and Caring Individual
Dr. Fairfax was a highly accomplished dentist and the founder of Dr. Fairfax and Associates Family Dentistry. Her friend and patient, Terron Sims II, told WUSA9 that being labeled a “politician’s wife” would be “at the bottom of the list” of descriptions for her. He described her as “one of the most loving, caring people” and stressed her personal accomplishments and expertise in her field.
Her dedication to her profession was evident throughout her career. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Duke University, where she met her husband, and later graduated magna cum laude with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from VCU’s Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry. After completing her residency, she built a two-decade career serving patients in Northern Virginia.
A Commitment to Service and Community
Sims recalled that dentistry was more than a job for Dr. Fairfax; it was “an expression of love and compassion” and her way of serving others. Her practice was known for being progressive in helping patients manage financial needs. Her commitment was recognized by VCU’s School of Dentistry, which awarded her the “Outstanding Graduate of the Last Decade” award in 2015.
Beyond her practice, Dr. Fairfax was deeply involved in community outreach. She participated in volunteer programs, sponsorships, and contributed to local charities aimed at helping those in need. Ryan Dunn, CEO of the Virginia Dental Association, noted her impact on building connections within the VDA and her community.
Devoted Mother and Cherished Friend
In her personal life, Dr. Fairfax was a proud mother of two children, Cameron and Carys. Those close to her remember her profound devotion to her kids, who were “the people she cherished the most,” according to Rep. Jennifer McClellan. Her death occurred as she and her family were planning college trips for her teenagers.
As her children face the unimaginable loss of both parents, loved ones are rallying around them, committed to providing support and ensuring they know their dreams and hopes can still be realized.
