Akon Defends Tekashi 6ix9ine Collab

Ever wondered why some artists make surprising collaborations? Akon is setting the record straight about his 2020 decision to work with Tekashi 6ix9ine on a remix of his hit song “Locked Up.” Despite facing significant backlash, the music mogul stands by his choice and says he’d do it all over again.

The controversy erupted because Tekashi 6ix9ine had previously cooperated with federal authorities in 2019, leading many in the hip-hop community to label him a “snitch.” This move apparently violated an unwritten “street code,” and rapper Tory Lanez even expressed his disappointment publicly on social media, lamenting that Akon gave the remix opportunity to someone else.

The Death of ‘Street Code’

In a recent interview with The Shade Room, Akon declared that the concept of “street code” is essentially dead. He explained that the codes he grew up with are no longer followed by the younger generation, making it impossible to violate something that no longer exists. “Everybody’s disobeying the codes, so there are no codes to even follow,” he stated.

Akon further elaborated that his decision to collaborate with Tekashi 6ix9ine was a strategic, generational move. He aimed to connect with a specific audience that was heavily influenced by Tekashi at that particular time. It was less about personal endorsement and more about reaching a demographic through a creative lens.

Beyond the Remix: Other Controversies

The interview also touched on other topics, including Akon’s views on polygamy. As a Muslim Senegalese-American, he explained that having multiple wives is a traditional practice. He also offered his perspective on his friend Neyo’s lifestyle, which reportedly includes having multiple girlfriends.

I applaud him for doing it, because he’s doing what a lot of guys wish and would want to do, they just don’t have the balls to be honest with the girls that they’re dealing with. — Akon

Looking ahead, Akon and Neyo are set to co-headline the “Nights Like This” Global Tour, a 57-city tour kicking off on April 24th in Dublin, Ireland. This tour promises to bring their unique styles to fans worldwide.
