In a recent NPR interview, Chappelle addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding jokes made in his 2021 Netflix special, “The Closer.” While he acknowledges that criticism of his work doesn’t bother him, he takes issue with how political figures have co-opted his material to push their own agendas. “I felt like they were doing a weaponized version of what I was doing. That’s not what I was doing,” he stated.
He recalled a specific instance involving Representative Lauren Boebert, where a photo of them together was posted by the congresswoman with a caption implying a shared stance on gender. Chappelle felt this was an immediate “weaponization or politicization” of his image and work, leading him to address it during a performance.
Defending Artistic Freedom
Chappelle emphasized his core belief in artistic freedom, stating, “What I take issue with is the idea that because they don’t like it, I’m not allowed to say it. Art is a nuanced endeavor.” He believes that conversations are increasingly being forced into rigid, absolute positions, and he doesn’t see the world in such black-and-white terms.
