Talk about making a difference! WNBA star Angel Reese recently returned to her roots in Baltimore to launch an incredible initiative aimed at empowering young female student-athletes through STEM.
A Full-Circle Moment for Angel Reese
Reese, who now plays for the Atlanta Dream, teamed up with the 2K Foundations, the charitable arm of the video game giant 2K. Together, they hosted a six-week STEM program for girls at Crossroads Middle School. This initiative is particularly special as it took place in Reese’s hometown county of Baltimore.
This program perfectly aligns with the mission of the Angel C. Reese Foundation, which focuses on broadening access to sports, education, and financial literacy. It’s all about giving young women the tools and opportunities they need to succeed both on and off the court.
Sparking Innovation Through STEM
The six-week program, developed in partnership with nonprofit STEM organizations Living Classrooms Foundation and Project Scientist, offered a wide range of exciting learning opportunities. Participants dove into areas like coding, robotics design, 3D printing, and even STEM-based sports projects. The goal was to foster critical thinking, career exploration, and essential skill-building.
James Piper Bond, President and CEO of Living Classrooms Foundation, highlighted the importance of this collaboration. He stated, “Girls thrive when they are given access, encouragement, and real-world opportunities to explore who they can become.” By investing in STEM education for these young athletes, they’re opening up new possibilities and helping build confidence for future careers.
Building a Movement
Dr. Patrice S. Johnson, CEO of Project Scientist, emphasized that this is more than just a one-time event. She called it “a movement” and a “long-term partnership” designed to put girls at the forefront of STEM. The “ME Bound: The Science Behind Rebounds” workshop, a highlight of the program, connected basketball concepts with scientific principles, making learning relatable and engaging.
