Fresh off making history with her groundbreaking $1.4 million/season WNBA supermax contract, Las Vegas Aces superstar A’ja Wilson traded the basketball court for the magic of Disney World. She recently served as a mentor at the 19th Annual Disney Dreamers Academy, inspiring 100 exceptional high school students to chase their own big dreams.
Making History and Sharing Gems
Wilson’s appearance at the program in Orlando, Florida, came at a pivotal moment in her career. As the first WNBA player to sign such a landmark contract, she spoke about the significance of the moment. “It’s a blessing… It’s a lot of hard work,” she shared, crediting the committee behind the new CBA that raised the salary cap and set the supermax at $1.4 million. “To be a part of the change, to be a part of this movement… is so powerful.”
Beyond her historic deal, Wilson shared her “Most Valuable Gems” – key insights and advice – with the selected Dreamers, who come from diverse backgrounds and communities. These students, chosen from thousands of applicants, were treated to an unforgettable experience focused on leadership, career development, and dreaming big, just like their basketball hero.
A Magical Surprise and Princess Tiana
Adding an extra layer of magic to the event, Wilson surprised four sports-passionate Dreamers – Krysten Lewis, Domenique Sexton, Alani Jordan, and Shakayah Watson – with an invitation to ride Tiana’s Bayou Adventure with her. The students were visibly thrilled to share this unique Disney experience with the MVP.
In a sweet full-circle moment, the Dreamers surprised Wilson with a special meeting with her favorite Disney character, Princess Tiana, who also inspired her custom-themed shoes. This interaction perfectly encapsulated the spirit of the Disney Dreamers Academy, where dreams truly come to life.
