Automatic Military Draft Registration Begins December 2026

Get ready for a significant shift in how young men register for the military draft. Starting in December 2026, the U.S. Selective Service System (SSS) will automatically register eligible men, moving away from the current self-registration process. This change, mandated by the fiscal 2026 National Defense Authorization Act, aims to streamline operations and save money.

Streamlining the Registration Process

The SSS, responsible for maintaining a database of men eligible for military service in case of a national emergency, submitted a proposal to integrate with existing federal data sources. This move transfers the responsibility of registration from individuals to the SSS itself. Most men between the ages of 18 and 25 are already required to register, but this new system will automate the process.

While there hasn’t been an active military draft in the U.S. since 1973, the move has sparked speculation, particularly concerning the current conflict in Iran. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that a draft is “not part of the current plan right now,” but President Donald Trump is reportedly keeping “his options on the table.”

Who Needs to Register and Penalties for Non-Compliance

To complete the registration, eligible men will need to provide their full name, home address, date of birth, and Social Security number. Men serving on full-time active duty in the military are exempt, as are those hospitalized or incarcerated during their registration eligibility period (ages 18-25). Immigrants who fail to register risk losing their U.S. citizenship.

Failure to register is a crime that can carry significant penalties, including fines up to $250,000 and imprisonment for up to five years. It can also affect eligibility for state-funded financial aid, federal employment, and job training programs.

Women and the Draft

Despite women’s integral role in modern military service, they remain ineligible for the draft. Previous legislative efforts to include women in draft provisions have not been successful. This continues to be a point of discussion, with some social media users questioning the government’s priorities, noting the automatic draft registration for men at 18 while voter registration is not automatic.
