Atlanta’s Sundresses & Seersuckers Celebrates 15 Years

Get ready, Atlanta! One of the city’s most anticipated spring traditions, Sundresses & Seersuckers, is back and celebrating a major milestone – its 15th anniversary! This isn’t just any party; it’s a vibrant four-day experience that perfectly blends sophisticated style, intentional community building, and impactful philanthropy.

From Day Party to Cultural Destination

What started as a single Saturday gathering has blossomed into a sprawling event organized by the Delta Mu Mu Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. It’s now a cornerstone of the Peach State’s social calendar, drawing over 15,000 attendees from across the nation. This impressive growth is a testament to the leadership’s vision.

Spearheading this evolution are co-chairs Larry Rasberry (a finance executive) and Wendell Span (an educator), alongside Patrick C. Daniel, chairman of the Commitment to Excellence 501(c)3. Together, they’ve transformed the event into a nationally recognized experience that generates significant revenue for crucial community initiatives.

More Than Just a Party: A Purposeful Experience

Larry Rasberry emphasizes that the goal is to create a true “experience” for attendees, not just an event. This year’s packed lineup reflects that commitment. It kicks off Thursday with a golf outing and “19th Hole” social, followed by a Meet and Greet, a bustling vendor marketplace, and Friday night’s “Prequel” party featuring diverse music genres.

Saturday shifts the focus to wellness and community, with a morning bootcamp and a panel discussion featuring Black doctors. The main event takes over the Home Depot Backyard, offering live music, curated lounges, VIP experiences, and a special Black beverage activation showcasing numerous Black-owned brands.

Driving Impact Through Philanthropy

At its heart, Sundresses & Seersuckers is deeply rooted in philanthropy. Proceeds from the event directly benefit the Commitment to Excellence’s Black Rhinos mentoring program. Since 2009, this initiative has awarded over $700,000 in scholarships to young Black men, providing them with leadership development, life skills training, and crucial career pathway opportunities.

Patrick C. Daniel describes the event as both a “cultural celebration” and a “vehicle for long-term change.” He highlights that attendees aren’t just showing up to look good; they are actively funding scholarships and supporting mentorship, opening doors that might not have existed otherwise. This makes Sundresses & Seersuckers one of the largest fundraisers within the Divine Nine.

Elevated Atmosphere and Enduring Brand

The event’s reputation for excellence is reinforced by its strong relationship with the city of Atlanta, even receiving support from Mayor Andre Dickens. Safety and curation are paramount, with an invitation-only model, a strict dress code, and robust security ensuring an elevated atmosphere. The organizers have also taken steps to trademark the event, preserving its unique identity as similar gatherings emerge.

Ultimately, the organizers emphasize that the event is truly “about the people” – the patrons, the sponsors, and most importantly, those whose lives are impacted by the philanthropic efforts. It’s a celebration of Black excellence, style, and community that continues to make a meaningful difference year after year.
