Let’s take a trip down memory lane and revisit why this dancehall-infused banger remains so special.
A New Sound for Drizzy
Back in 2016, Drake was riding high, fresh off a notable public exchange with Meek Mill. But instead of resting on his laurels, he decided to push his artistic boundaries. He dove headfirst into the vibrant world of dancehall, and “One Dance” became the shining example of this exciting sonic exploration. It was a bold move that paid off spectacularly.
The magic of “One Dance” lies in its effortless blend of genres and its star-studded features. Collaborating with Nigerian superstar WizKid and the soulful vocals of Kyla, Drake crafted a track that was undeniably catchy. Even reading about it now makes you want to hum along, a testament to its enduring appeal and unforgettable chorus.
Chart-Topping Success and Diamond Status
Despite its immense popularity, “One Dance” surprisingly flew under the radar at many major award shows. However, its commercial performance was nothing short of spectacular. The song quickly climbed to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and held its ground, eventually landing at third place on the year-end chart. It’s a testament to its widespread appeal that it resonated with so many listeners.
The track’s success is further cemented by its RIAA certification. “One Dance” has achieved an incredible 11 times platinum status, a rare feat that places it among Drake’s most successful records. This diamond-level achievement underscores its status as one of the biggest songs in his entire catalog, a true testament to its lasting impact.
