Husband Confesses to Murdering Florida Politician

A shocking turn of events has unfolded in Florida, where the husband of a prominent local politician has confessed to her murder. Stephen Bowen is now facing serious charges, including first-degree pre-meditated murder and tampering with evidence, following his admission to both law enforcement and his own family members.

A Confession Triggered by a Family Member

The arrest of Stephen Bowen was initiated by his uncle, Owen Small. According to arrest reports, Stephen approached his uncle seeking help to hide the shotgun used in the crime. Approximately four hours after this unsettling request, Small contacted 911, expressing his belief that Stephen had harmed his wife, Coral Springs Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen, and that she was no longer alive.

This critical tip led to a massive response from the Coral Springs Police Department. Officers were able to enter Stephen and Nancy’s home without a warrant due to the circumstances of the 911 call. Inside, they discovered Vice Mayor Bowen’s body, which showed signs of bullet wounds and had been wrapped in plastic.

Details of the Confession

Detectives reported that Stephen Bowen voluntarily waived his Miranda rights and provided a recorded statement detailing the events. He confessed to a domestic dispute with his wife, which escalated after a verbal argument. Bowen admitted to retrieving a shotgun and firing the fatal shot, describing it as the breaking point in their relationship.

Stephen Bowen explained that he shot her three times with a shotgun the previous night and then slept downstairs. He went on to say that NM was rolled up in a comforter with a garbage bag around her feet… When asked why, Stephen Bowen said that he, ‘Couldn’t take it anymore.’ — Arrest Report

Physical evidence found at the residence reportedly corroborates Stephen’s account, as well as his uncle’s statement. The Broward County State Attorney’s Office is requesting that Bowen be held without bond.

Charges and Next Steps

Stephen Bowen, 40, was apprehended in a parking lot in Plantation, Florida, while allegedly attempting to hand off a firearm-carrying case to a friend. Nancy Metayer Bowen, 38, was a significant figure in Florida politics, serving as the Vice-Chair of the Florida Democrat Party and Vice Mayor of Coral Springs. Stephen is scheduled for a formal arraignment early next week, where the prosecution is expected to present his recorded confession as key evidence.
