Get ready to hum along, New York! Cardi B is joining forces with NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani to launch an exciting new initiative: a citywide jingle contest for the upcoming “2-K” free childcare program. This program aims to make quality childcare accessible for all 2-year-olds in the city, regardless of income or immigration status.
A Jingle for Universal Childcare
The goal is simple: find the catchiest tune to spread the word about this vital new program. The winning jingle will become the official theme song for the “2-K” initiative and will even get radio play. It’s a creative way to engage the community and build excitement for a program that could significantly impact working families.
In a video released alongside the announcement, Cardi B expressed her surprise and delight at Mayor Mamdani’s young age, joking about him running the city. But the conversation quickly turned serious as they discussed the importance of free childcare. “I feel like free childcare is very important,” Cardi B stated, highlighting how a lack of affordable options can hinder women’s progress.
Details of the “2-K” Program
Mayor Mamdani outlined the “2-K” program, which is set to launch this fall. It will offer 2,000 free childcare seats for 2-year-olds, starting in the Bronx and expanding to other areas like Washington Heights, Southeast Queens, and Canarsie in Brooklyn. Enrollment is scheduled to open on June 2 and will close on June 26, giving families a window to apply.
Cardi B enthusiastically agreed to be a judge for the jingle contest, alongside the Mayor. “The mayor’s going to help you! And I’m gonna judge, and he’s going to give because he’s the one with the funds!” she quipped, emphasizing the collaborative effort behind the program.
A Message of Choice and Opportunity
Mayor Mamdani even referenced Cardi B’s hit song “Bodak Yellow” in a statement, saying, “As Cardi B says: ‘I can get ’em both. I don’t wanna choose.’ With universal child care, New Yorkers won’t have to.” He stressed that families shouldn’t have to choose between affordable care and living in the city they love, asserting that with “2-K,” they can have both.
New Yorkers interested in participating can submit their original 15- and 30-second songs through the city’s official website. The deadline for entries is April 17. Participants are also encouraged to share their creations online using the hashtag #NYC2KJingle and tag @nycmayor.
