After more than a decade of waiting, survivors of the Flint water crisis are finally seeing some movement towards compensation. A federal judge in Michigan has issued a new order, giving the green light for partial payments to adults who have approved claims stemming from the devastating crisis that began in 2014.
A Long-Awaited Step Forward
U.S. District Judge Judith E. Levy approved a request from Special Master Deborah Greenspan to begin distributing funds from the $626.25 million settlement. This decision to start partial payments, even as appeals are still ongoing, marks a significant shift in the claims process. For many Flint residents, who make up a significant African American population, this is a moment of relief after years of frustration over missed deadlines.
Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley, himself a resident of the city, expressed shared frustration but also gratitude. “I am thankful that Judge Levy has taken this step to begin distributing these funds. It is long overdue,” he stated, acknowledging the immense wait victims have endured since November 2021.
Expanding Compensation to Minors
The judge’s order doesn’t stop at adult claimants. It also authorizes payments for individuals who were minors during the crisis but have since reached adulthood. This ensures that those who were most vulnerable during the lead contamination period will also receive compensation once the initial payments to adults are underway.
Prior to this, officials had already begun issuing payments for property damage claims, capped at $1,000. As of March 20, over 8,000 award letters had been sent out, with a majority of respondents indicating their preferred payment method, according to court documents.
The Lasting Impact of the Crisis
The Flint water crisis, which exposed over 100,000 residents to lead and other contaminants, has had profound and lasting effects. Reports indicate that approximately 4,000 children were exposed to high lead levels, potentially causing cognitive and behavioral challenges. The crisis has also been linked to at least 12 deaths and numerous cases of Legionnaires’ disease, with roughly 25% of Flint residents reporting symptoms of PTSD.
