How Reebok Set Allen Iverson Up For Life

Imagine being one of the most electrifying players in NBA history, drafted number one overall, and having two sportswear giants vying for your signature. That was the reality for Allen Iverson back in 1996. While he could have easily ended up as a Nike athlete, his decision to sign with Reebok ultimately set him up for life, a move that continues to pay dividends today.

A Near Miss with Nike

Iverson, a Georgetown University standout, was projected to be a major Nike prospect. Howard H. White, a senior vice president at Jordan Brand, even reached out to Nike co-founder Phil Knight, urging him to sign Iverson immediately as he prepared for the 1996 NBA Draft. White had a connection through Iverson’s guidance counselor and his mother, Ann.

However, Reebok also entered the race, offering Iverson marketing money on top of his base deal. This financial incentive proved to be a significant edge. White recalled on the “All The Smoke” podcast that Reebok’s offer was substantial, potentially exceeding what Michael Jordan was making at the time. Despite White’s efforts, Iverson’s mother ultimately advised him to “go for the money,” leading him to sign with Reebok.

The Reebok Deal That Changed Everything

Iverson’s initial 10-year deal with Reebok in 1996 was reportedly valued at $50 million. But the real game-changer came in 2001 when he signed a lifetime contract. This landmark deal ensures he receives $800,000 annually, a testament to his enduring impact and marketability.

While Iverson earned $171.7 million in career earnings during his 14 seasons in the NBA, his financial savvy extended beyond the court. He’s strategically invested in ventures like the cannabis industry through a partnership with Viola Brands and has a significant real estate portfolio. Notably, he’s approved for a 120-unit affordable housing project called “Iverson Landing” in his hometown of Newport News, VA.

A Future Payday Awaits

Adding to his financial security, Iverson’s lifetime partnership with Reebok also includes a substantial $32 million payday, which he is set to receive on his 55th birthday in 2030. It’s clear that the decision to align with Reebok was a pivotal moment that secured his financial future for decades to come.
