In a move that seems to fulfill a wish previously expressed by former President Donald Trump, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has signed a bill to rename Palm Beach International Airport. The airport will officially become President Donald J. Trump International Airport starting July 1, pending final approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
A Bill Signed, A Name Changed
The bill, signed by DeSantis on March 30, ensures that Palm Beach County will have the ‘perpetual and unrestricted right’ to use the Trump name and related abbreviations for the airport at no cost. This decision follows Trump’s earlier threats to withhold funding for a New York-New Jersey tunnel project unless airports like Dulles International and NYC’s Penn Station were named after him.
Eric Trump, the former president’s son, celebrated the news on X (formerly Twitter), expressing pride in playing a role in the renaming. He thanked Governor DeSantis and other Florida officials for their support in making the change happen.
Controversy and Cost Concerns
The renaming has drawn criticism from Democratic lawmakers, including Florida House party leader Fentrice Driskell. She condemned DeSantis’ decision, estimating the cost to taxpayers at $5 million. Driskell argued that instead of prioritizing affordability for Floridians, Republican leaders chose to ‘waste five million of your taxpayer dollars on renaming an airport.’
Trump is a frequent traveler through Palm Beach International Airport, as his Mar-a-Lago residence is located just five miles away. This renaming follows a pattern of Trump attaching his name to public services and buildings, similar to his presidential library designs and a recently renamed stretch of road near his estate.
Presidential Libraries and Political Landscape
The move comes shortly after Democrats secured an electoral victory in the county by flipping a state House seat in a district that includes Trump’s resort and the airport. Meanwhile, Eric Trump also revealed design plans for the Donald J. Trump Presidential Library, envisioning a prominent tower along the Miami skyline. This proposed library, like former President Barack Obama’s upcoming library, has already faced some controversy, including a legal challenge regarding the land gift from Miami Dade College.
