Angela Simmons Recalls Awkward Cam Newton Date

Remember that awkward first date where you just couldn’t wait for it to be over? Angela Simmons recently shared a story about a 2011 encounter with Cam Newton that sounds exactly like that – a total nightmare! During an appearance on Newton’s own podcast, “Funky Friday,” Simmons didn’t hold back.

A Diner Date Gone Wrong

Simmons recalled meeting Newton for the first time at a diner, set up by a mutual friend. The conversation, however, quickly took a turn. According to Angela, Cam spent the entire time cracking jokes that he found hilarious, but she certainly didn’t.

She described him laughing at his own punchlines and patting himself on the back, leaving her feeling completely unimpressed. “I was ready to go,” Simmons admitted, clearly signaling that the vibe was far from romantic.

A Glimmer of Hope (and an Awkward Exit)

Things apparently shifted slightly on the taxi ride back. Newton started being “nicer,” and they even sat outside the hotel to talk, giving Simmons a chance to see a different side of him. “That’s when I got to know you, and you were like super nice there,” she said. However, she quickly clarified that this wasn’t the start of a romance, stating, “that was like the end of our dating era.”

Simmons described Newton’s behavior at the time as feeling “like an arrogant asshole.” She vividly remembered thinking, “This is not funny,” while he was clearly enjoying his own humor. The feeling of wanting to escape was strong.

Newton’s Perspective: Pre-Draft Jitters?

When asked about the date, Cam Newton admitted he doesn’t remember it playing out quite that way. He suggested he had “a lot on [his] mind” at the time, as it was the night before he was drafted. He even joked about not being able to imagine being “that corny” and suggested it might have been an “out-of-body experience.”

While the date itself might not have been a success, it certainly made for an entertaining story! It’s a funny reminder that even celebrities have awkward dating moments.
