The rap world was set ablaze recently with the intense back-and-forth between Drake and Kendrick Lamar. Now, J. Cole is weighing in, and he admits he’s a bit lost! On the latest episode of the “7PM In Brooklyn” podcast with Carmelo Anthony, Cole shared his thoughts on the beef, revealing his confusion over a specific diss from Kendrick and even expressing a desire for the two titans to eventually reconcile.
Confusion Over Kendrick’s Diss
One of the most talked-about moments from the feud was Kendrick Lamar’s track “Not Like Us,” which included the line: “Did Cole foul, I don’t know why you still pretending.” J. Cole confessed during the podcast that he genuinely doesn’t understand the meaning behind that particular bar. “He said that he doesn’t know why Lamar said that, so he can’t help fans in solving that mystery,” the Dreamville artist explained.
It’s a sentiment many fans have echoed, trying to decipher the exact intent behind Kendrick’s words. The complexity of rap lyrics often leaves room for interpretation, but Cole’s direct admission of not knowing adds another layer to the intrigue.
The Impact of His Apology
J. Cole also touched upon his own brief involvement and subsequent apology to Kendrick Lamar. He admitted that his apology might dilute his perspective on the nature of rap battles. “I feel unqualified,” Cole stated, reflecting on his role. “You’re talking about the person that apologized. That’s what’s gon’ go down as my participation in that event.”
He expressed that he’s not particularly interested in giving his opinion on whether beef is good or bad for hip-hop, especially after his own actions. “Honestly, who gives a f**k, actually? Definitely, who gives a f**k about my opinion?” he questioned, suggesting his viewpoint might be compromised.
Hopes for a Future Reunion
Despite the intensity of the recent conflict, J. Cole expressed a hopeful sentiment for the future. He stated that he would “love if his ‘Big Three’ colleagues peace it up one day.” However, he also acknowledged the unlikelihood of such a reconciliation happening anytime soon, adding, “Only time will tell… Even if it’s unlikely.”
The “Poetic Justice” duo, as he referred to Drake and Kendrick, have a long history, and many fans would undoubtedly welcome a return to a more collaborative or at least less contentious relationship between them. Cole’s words suggest a broader perspective on the genre, valuing unity even amidst fierce competition.
