The LSU Tigers women’s basketball team is rewriting the record books! They’ve officially broken an NCAA record by achieving their 16th game scoring 100 points or more this season. This offensive powerhouse is making waves as they advance through the NCAA Tournament.
A Historic Scoring Season
The Tigers secured their place in history during their Sweet Sixteen victory over Texas Tech, winning with a dominant score of 101-47. This win marked their 16th game this season where they’ve crossed the century mark in points. They had previously tied the record in the first round against Jacksonville, where they secured an even larger victory, 116-58.
This incredible scoring feat surpasses the previous NCAA Division I record of 15 100-point games, set by Long Beach State University nearly 40 years ago during the 1986-87 season. The LSU team’s consistent offensive dominance is truly remarkable.
More Than Just Scoring Records
Beyond the scoring record, the Tigers have also etched their names in the tournament’s history books by becoming the second team ever to start the tournament with two consecutive victories of 50 points or more. This demonstrates their consistent ability to blow out opponents.
Junior guard Mikaylah Williams, who contributed 24 points in the record-breaking game, expressed the team’s excitement. “It’s everybody’s dream to have their names in the history books,” she said. “So, it’s truly a good feeling and a blessing to even be able to do this.”
Looking Ahead
With this win, LSU advances to their fourth consecutive Sweet Sixteen. Their next challenge comes on Sunday, March 29th, when they face the No. 3 seed Duke Raiders. The team currently boasts an impressive 29-5 season record.
Head coach Kim Mulkey, while acknowledging the record, remains focused on the ultimate goal: national championships. “I don’t think one thing about it,” Mulkey stated. “That is not something that, when I’m in my rocking chair, I’m gonna tell the grandkids… but I won’t forget those national championships.”
