UNC Fires Basketball Coach Hubert Davis

The University of North Carolina has made a significant change in its men’s basketball program, announcing the dismissal of head coach Hubert Davis after five seasons at the helm. This decision follows another disappointing early exit from the NCAA tournament.

Disappointing Tournament Performance Leads to Coaching Change

The final straw for the Tar Heels’ leadership appears to be the team’s second consecutive first-round exit from the NCAA tournament. This year, UNC, a higher seed, suffered an overtime loss to the 11th-seeded Virginia Commonwealth University, despite holding a significant lead earlier in the game. The school officially announced Davis’ dismissal on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, following recommendations from Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham and incoming Athletic Director Steve Newmark.

In a statement, Cunningham expressed gratitude for Davis’ contributions, acknowledging his character and dedication as a player, assistant coach, and head coach. However, he emphasized the need for the program to “compete more consistently at an elite level,” indicating that the decision, while difficult, was necessary for the team’s future success.

Hubert Davis Responds to Dismissal

Hubert Davis, a former star player for UNC and a 12-season NBA veteran, shared his response on social media. He expressed his desire to continue coaching and thanked the university for the “blessing” of the opportunity. Davis stated he is “very proud of what we were able to accomplish together” and aims to “coach again in the very near future.”

During his tenure as head coach, which began in April 2021 after Roy Williams retired, Davis compiled a record of 125-54. He had previously served as an assistant coach under Williams from 2012 to 2021. His playing career at UNC spanned from 1988 to 1992, and he was drafted by the New York Knicks in 1992.

Looking Ahead for the Tar Heels

The dismissal of Hubert Davis marks the end of an era for the UNC men’s basketball program. The university now faces the task of finding a new leader who can guide the Tar Heels back to consistent elite-level performance in the highly competitive NCAA landscape. Fans will be eager to see who steps into the role next.
