It’s hard to imagine now, but acclaimed director Ryan Coogler, the mastermind behind hits like ‘Creed’ and ‘Fruitvale Station,’ was once drowning in student loan debt while working on his blockbuster films. Despite his current multi-million dollar net worth and impressive collection of awards, Coogler’s journey to the top was far from easy.
From Football Dreams to Screenwriting
Originally from Oakland, California, Coogler’s childhood dreams leaned towards the NFL, with a backup plan to become a doctor. He played football throughout high school and even earned a scholarship to St. Mary’s College of California. However, a creative writing course taught by Rosemary Graham sparked a new passion. Graham recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue screenwriting in Hollywood, planting a seed that would eventually change his career path.
After his college’s football program was discontinued, Coogler transferred to Sacramento State, where he began taking film courses. He later pursued a master’s degree at the USC School of Cinematic Arts. It was during this period that the tragic murder of Oscar Grant by a police officer deeply impacted Coogler, inspiring his first feature film, ‘Fruitvale Station,’ starring Michael B. Jordan.
The ‘Creed’ Debt Revelation
Coogler developed the script for ‘Fruitvale Station’ through the Sundance Screenwriters Lab, receiving valuable creative guidance. The film premiered to critical acclaim at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, winning both the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award, and achieved significant box office success on a modest budget. Following this triumph, Coogler embarked on his next major project: ‘Creed,’ a spin-off of the iconic ‘Rocky’ franchise, which once again featured his frequent collaborator Michael B. Jordan.
Released in 2015, ‘Creed’ was a massive hit. However, Coogler revealed on the “WTF with Marc Maron” podcast that even as he was working on the film, he was still burdened by substantial student loan debt. “Back then, bro, I wasn’t making no money,” he recalled. “I was $200,000 in debt for film school. It was bad.”
From Debt to $25 Million Net Worth
Today, Ryan Coogler’s financial situation is vastly different. He boasts an estimated net worth of $25 million. His recent film, ‘Sinners,’ garnered significant recognition, earning 16 nominations and four wins, including an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. This win made him only the second Black writer, after Jordan Peele, to receive the prestigious award.
Furthermore, Coogler secured remarkable terms for ‘Sinners,’ including full ownership of the film in 25 years, final cut rights, and a percentage of the box office returns. His journey is a powerful testament to perseverance, talent, and the eventual rewards of pursuing one’s passion, even when faced with significant financial hurdles.
