Niecy Nash’s Birthday Trip to Puerto Vallarta Turns Scary

What was meant to be a joyous birthday celebration turned into a frightening ordeal for Niecy Nash and her loved ones. The actress recently shared that her birthday trip to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, was disrupted by local authorities’ operations targeting cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho.”

A Birthday Getaway Under Lockdown

Nash, who was celebrating her 56th birthday with her wife Jessica Betts, mother, children, and friends, posted about the experience on Instagram. The group found themselves caught in cartel-related escalations, leading to a shelter-in-place warning. She recounted challenges such as a hotel’s refusal to share rations and a tour operator’s denial of a refund after they canceled an excursion due to safety concerns.

Despite the fear and anxiety, Nash emphasized the resilience of her group and their determination to maintain their joy. She shared a video of them cheerfully singing the “Golden Girls” theme song at the airport amidst cancelled flights and long lines, drawing positive attention from onlookers.

Safety Concerns and Safe Return

Nash described the situation as “scary,” especially with other people’s children in her care. However, she expressed immense gratitude for the support received, including prayers, well wishes, and assistance from the U.S. Embassy. “That’s why you have to take every moment to celebrate joy, celebrate life, all the things,” she reflected, underscoring the importance of cherishing life’s moments.

Puerto Vallarta: Safety Update

Puerto Vallarta, a popular tourist destination known for its resorts and beaches, experienced heightened security due to the operation against El Mencho. Local authorities reported that Cervantes was killed, and no civilians were harmed. The U.S. State Department has lifted its shelter-in-place advisory for the area and stated that U.S. Embassies and consulates in Mexico are operating normally as of February 25.

While Mexico is generally classified as a “Level 2” travel advisory zone (exercise increased caution), the State Department notes that there are no travel restrictions in key areas like Puerto Vallarta and the Guadalajara Metropolitan area. However, the state of Jalisco, where Puerto Vallarta is located, is under a “Level 3: Reconsider Travel” advisory due to concerns about terrorism, crime, and kidnapping.

Following her birthday trip, Nash held a separate Michael Jordan-themed celebration in Los Angeles, attended by numerous celebrities, further highlighting her resilience and commitment to celebrating life.
